To the Editor: In their discussion of responding
to patients' requests for physician-assisted suicide (PAS), Drs Bascom and
Tolle1 did not cite any of the vast psychological
or social work literature related to end-of-life issues, some of which could
have strengthened and supported their analyses. This reliance on medical journals,
although understandable given that the authors are physicians, could lead
readers to assume that no other relevant material had been published. A multidisciplinary
review would be more consistent with the need for interdisciplinary collaboration
in providing care.
