To the Editor: Dr Mukamal and colleagues1 found moderate alcohol consumption during the year
prior to myocardial infarction to be independently associated with reduced
mortality risk during the subsequent year. Subjects were asked to report their
weekly consumption of alcohol but not the rate at which it was consumed. We
believe that the distinction between the daily consumption of small amounts
of alcohol and infrequent binge drinking is crucial. Among the many potential
adverse consequences of binge drinking is the frequency of the alcohol hangover,
which was not assessed in the study of Mukamal et al.
