Official death certification data for 17 selected European countries
were derived from the World Health Organization (WHO) database. Classification
of kidney cancer deaths was recoded for all calendar periods and countries
according to the International Classification of Diseases,
Ninth Revision (code 189). No distinction was possible between renal
cell carcinoma, which accounts for 80% to 85% of all malignant tumors of the
kidney,3 and transitional cell carcinomas
of the renal pelvis.
