All subjects and data were from the Adult Spectrum of Disease study, a prospective study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention examining the natural history of HIV. This was a cross-sectional study of HIV-infected persons who attended the clinic between January 1996 and July 1998 and had a CD4+ cell count less than 0.50 × 109/L (500/µL) or a viral load greater than 20,000 copies/mL. All patients had access to PIs through Ryan White CARE Act funds. Logistic regression was used to determine what characteristics were associated with failure to receive PIs.
