argue that the PPE may not predict or prevent athletic injuries. This
may well be the case. However, we must emphasize that our study was
specifically limited to an analysis of athletic screening for
cardiovascular abnormalities and really does not address the
musculoskeletal or other organ systems or issues concerned with
traumatic injuries. Considerations related to the risks of injury
should not be confused with the possible consequences of unsuspected
cardiovascular diseases in young athletes, eg, sudden cardiac death on
the athletic field. They are very different issues.
