regimen, either doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily for 7 days, or a 1-g
dose of azithromycin, was based on local clinic policy, which reflects
standard treatment in most clinic settings serving adolescents at risk.
We agree that analyzing our data on repeat chlamydia infections by
treatment modality or compliance or both may have provided interesting
information on efficacy. Although data on treatment regimen were not
collected in our study, 2 recent reports compared the efficacy of
doxycycline vs azithromycin and found them to be comparable, with
treatment failures of less than 5% at 2 to 4 weeks after
therapy.1- 2 Therefore, we do not believe differentiation of
results by treatment regimen or reported patient compliance would have
altered our findings.
