“We hope Guinea worm will be the second disease in history to be eradicated from the face of the Earth,” said former US President Jimmy Carter, who founded the Carter Center. Smallpox, the only human disease ever eradicated, was vanquished during Carter's presidency. The Carter Center hosted a ceremony in February to observe the achievements in both African nations.
