The Porter narcotic bill to reorganize the federal narcotic service, H. R. 11143, amended to meet the only major objection raised against it on behalf of the American Medical Association, was passed by the Senate, June 5. The House of Representatives has agreed to the amendment, and the bill is now before the President for approval. If approved, it will become effective at the expiration of thirty days. The amendment made at the instance of the Association requires the Secretary of the Treasury to cooperate with the states in enforcing state laws to prevent the abuse of narcotic drugs and to cooperate, if necessary, in the formulation of state legislation to accomplish that end.
