The National Cancer Institute has launched a free text-based smoking cessation program for teens, which provides 24/7 access to encouragement, advice, and tips for quitting.

The aim of the SmokefreeTXT program is to use mobile phones to make evidence-based cessation strategies available to the roughly 20% of teens who smoke. Teenagers who would like to quit smoking can sign up for the program at http://teen.smokefree.gov; they will receive messages timed to help them quit on a date they select and to provide support for up to 6 weeks after their quit date.

A free smartphone application is also scheduled for launch this month.
