Computation Error: In the Letter entitled “Population Attributable Risk of Incident Hypertension in Women” published in the December 16, 2009, issue of JAMA (2009;302[23]:2550-2551), a computation error occurred that does not change the results. On page 2250, the formula should be
“PAR = Pd[(HR-1) ÷ HR]
where Pd represents the proportion of the cases exposed to the risk factor.1” This alternative formula was used to recalculate all of the PARs that were reported in the letter. The interpretation of the data is identical to what was originally published in the article. The PARs using this formula are 53% (3 healthy lifestyle factors), 58% (4 factors), 72% (5 factors), and 78% (6 factors).
