An estimated 50 million women in Asia are at risk of acquiring HIV infection from their husband or long-time partner, according to a report released last month by the Joint United Nationals Programme on HIV/AIDS, or UNAIDS.

The report, HIV Transmission in Intimate Partner Relationships in Asia, is available online at http://data.unaids.org/pub/Report/2009/intimate_partners_report_en.pdf.

“Evidence from many countries in Asia indicate that most women are acquiring HIV not because of their own sexual behaviours but because their partners engage in unsafe behaviours,” the report said, noting that it is estimated that more than 90% of the approximately 1.7 million women in Asia currently living with HIV acquired the virus from their husband or a long-time partner.

The report calls for prevention programs that are aimed at men who engage in unsafe behaviors—injecting drug use or sex with other men or with female sex workers—and that also emphasize to such men the importance of protecting their regular female partners.
