To the Editor.  —The Graduate Medical Education Advisory Committee to the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association in its May 1996 meeting spent considerable time discussing physician workforce issues. As an important part of this discussion, we considered the article by Ms Miller and colleagues,1 which is a timely and critically relevant study on the physician workforce. We believe that continued reassessment of this information is extremely important for the future of American medicine and must be made available in a timely fashion to medical educators and planners, as well as to medical students and those planning medical careers. We are deeply distressed by the professional and human issues raised by changes in physician supply and feel committed to the collection and distribution of this important information.
