To the Editor.  —I am disturbed by the use of the term panculturing in the recent letter on the use of blood cultures by Gutow.1 I have not been able to find this word listed in several major medical dictionaries.2-4 Recently, I extensively reviewed a major textbook5 in preparation for the subspecialty examination in infectious diseases and I do not recall the use of the term. A MEDLINE search for the years 1980 through 1993 failed to reveal any references mentioning panculture or panculturing.Stedman's Medical Dictionary defines the prefix pan- as a "prefix properly affixed to words derived from Greek roots, denoting all, entire."2One would justifiably assume that if panculturing had been performed, then cultures of all tissues were obtained on a particular patient, or that the entire patient was cultured.
