Endoscopic urology has entered a new era. The development of a fiberoptic light source, a fine viewing lens, flexible instruments, and miniature equipment has led to a quantum leap in endoscopic diagnosis and treatment.

The A. he cystoscope remains the standard for diagnosis and treatment of bladder and prostate problems. However, the flexible laparoscope and rigid and flexible ureteroscopes represent recent progress in urologic diagnosis and treatment. The laparoscope is not new; however, its use in urology is relatively recent. Indications for urologic application of the laparoscope in diagnosis and treatment are rapidly increasing.1,2 The flexible laparoscope is 11 mm in diameter, and the technique for its insertion is through the umbilicus with a trocar after carbon dioxide inflation of the peritoneum.
