To the Editor.— Among the tools on which we physicians rely is the hospital computer, from which we retrieve both laboratory results and, at many hospitals, the relevant range of normal values. Our trust in these values is not always merited.
Report of a Case. — A 99-year-old previously healthy man presented to the emergency department with a complaint of weakness of 2 days' duration. A chest roentgenogram suggested pneumonia. The complete blood cell count revealed a white blood cell count of 19.4×109/L. Though the accustomed normal range is 4.5 × 109/L to 10.8 × 109/L and at this hospital elevated values are flagged with an "H," this count was not so flagged.
