ABSTRACT

To the Editor.—  TheThe practice of medicine often presents us with unusual and exotic diagnostic dilemmas. Such cases generally reaffirm my belief that a good physician is as much sleuth as scientist.

Report of a Case.—  On June 16, 1986, a 42-year-old male police officer complained of bilateral upper-extremity numbness that traveled the length of his arms and was exacerbated by reaching or stretching. The symptoms were greatest on the medial aspect of both arms and hands. He denied any other neurological or musculoskeletal symptoms. He also denied recent trauma to the neck, shoulders, or arms. He had not engaged in any recent heavy-caliber rifle or pistol practive, nor had he engaged in significant physical activity recently. His job consisted mainly of daily patrol in his squad car.Results of the examination of his neck and upper extremities were within normal limits.
