In Reply.— Dresser makes a number of assertions that are generally already covered in our examination of the regulation of animal experimentation. However, we think it is necessary to respond to several of her comments because they illustrate a more general failure on the part of Dresser and others to understand and appreciate the real issues and interests that are at the heart of this controversy.We take strong exception to Dresser's statement that we see no legitimate reason for the current debate over animal experimentation. In fact, we quite clearly recognize that "few would argue that animal rights advocates have certain concerns that must be seriously addressed by the scientific community." The point that we make repeatedly is that recent proposals for additional regulation are not satisfactory means to address these concerns.
