In Reply.— Dr Bassler's comments are appreciated and provocative. Relative risk is the rate of death during jogging divided by the rate during sedentary activity. It can decrease with either a decrease in the jogging or an increase in the sedentary death rate. Furthermore, the absolute risk of jogging in our study increased with age. This is expected if CHD was responsible for the majority of the exercise-related deaths. Despite Dr Bassler's experience, autopsies in seven of our CHD victims showed advanced disease. Another four men were not examined—two died with chest pain and two had suffered prior myocardial infarctions. Dr Bassler's implication that CHD does not cause exercise-related deaths in adults contrasts with these results and other published reports,1 but we eagerly await presentation of his experience.Dr Bassler rejects a premise that is not ours. We did not calculate the risk of jogging for men with CHD.
