To the Editor.—  We question the species identification of a Rhizopus isolated from a cutaneous infection associated with an elasticized adhesive dressing (242:272, 1979). The species was identified as R oryzae, but no information was furnished regarding the criteria for the identification, and no confirmation from an expert mycologist in this area was reported. We requested this culture specimen from the authors for study, but it appears to be no longer available. Similarly, two isolates originally reported to cause cutaneous infections associated with elasticized adhesive (Elastoplast) bandages are also no longer available.1,2The only confirmed cultures associated with the Elastoplast bandages have been identified as R rhizopodiformis,2-4 not R oryzae. It is unfortunate that the epidemiology of these cutaneous infections associated with Elastoplast bandages has been confused by inadequate reports.
