To the Editor. — As a proctologist, I would like to publicize the potential danger of red color blindness with failure to recognize bowel bleeding early, before alteration in bowel function and other signs arise. All physicians, not just proctologists, ophthalmologists, and urologists, should alert red color-blind patients to this possibility. This will require inspection by a second party, frequently the spouse, when bleeding from any body orifice is suspected. Many lives will obviously be saved with early intervention.
