Through a national collaborative effort, a transplant communications network has been operational for the past four years. A total of 5,077 prospective transplant recipients from 94 centers has been listed. A total of 455 kidneys has been shared between cities. The rapid increase in the number of prospective cadaver recipients has resulted in an increase in the average waiting time for suitable transplant candidates. Since more than half of the patients currently in the pool are at high risk because they are presensitized, an active national kidney sharing program is essential.
