ABSTRACT

Although long known to exist in the western United States, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) was not described in medical writings until the end of the 19th century. In this issue (p 1338) Hattwick and his colleagues of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) remind that, although RMSF by its name suggests western localization of the disease, it is in fact endemic throughout the United States. Cases have been reported during the last decade from all except five states, with the greatest number of reports coming from the southeastern area, Virginia and North Carolina leading all others.

Following introduction of specific chemotherapy in the 1940s, reports of RMSF become numerous, giving rise to the hope that the disease would cease to be a major public health problem. Since 1960, however, there has been a substantial resurgence of this tick-borne rickettsial pox. That fact prompted the workers at CDC to carry
