ABSTRACT

A book review in this issue of The Journal (p 1104) calls attention to the increased availability of information on formally adopted nonproprietary names for drugs. The names in the booklet reviewed originate from cooperative negotiations between the AMA-USP Nomenclature Committee and the manufacturers concerned.

The publication is an outgrowth of the New Names columns which appear regularly in The Journal and in cooperating journals. It is the first of a series. To many the booklet and the New Names columns will provide desired nomenclature information on the compounds for which data is listed.

The purpose of the booklet and the New Names column will be achieved only if two other objectives are also attained: (1) if research workers are encouraged to use these formally adopted nonproprietary names (USAN) in the articles they submit for publication, and (2) if all manufacturers who market products containing compounds included in these listings
