An elevated concentration of calcium ions increases the irritability of ventricular myocardium in rabbits, rats, and dogs. Perfusion with calciumfree solution restores sinus rhythm to a rabbit heart with ventricular fibrillation. Salts of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (Edathamil) have the capacity of lowering the concentration of calcium ions in plasma. These salts have been used for chelation of calcium in man since 1950. The results of induced hypocalcemia, according to Surawicz,1 are due either to the direct action of edathamil upon the heart or to the reduction of serum calcium ions. Soffer2 and co-workers administered edathamil calcium-disodium to 43 patients during a 22-month period of observation. The edathamil was given in dosages of from 0.5 Gm. to 4 Gm. in periods ranging from 1/2 hour to 4 hours. There were in this group 30 female and 13 male patients. Of these 43 patients, 23 had atherosclerotic heart disease with
