THE PANCREATROPIC HORMONE OF THE PITUITARY  Although Koster92 states that the pancreas of hypophysectomized dogs is usually atrophic, no specific changes have been observed in the islands of Langerhans that would prove a regulatory influence of the hypophysis on the endocrine activities of the pancreas.Anselmino and Hoffmann93 have recently stated that administration of anterior pituitary extracts increases the size and number of the islands of Langerhans in the pancreas of the rat. They believe that this effect is due to a specific pituitary hormone, for which the name "pankreatrope Substanz" (pancreatropic substance) has been suggested. Further experiments by
