Genes for Heart Disease Risk

Three independent research groups from around the globe have identified a total of 19 new genes associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), findings that more than double the number of genes known to affect the risk of heart disease.

An international consortium known as Cardiogram consisting of 167 scientists from around the world analyzed more than 100 000 Europeans and identified 13 new genetic risk loci for CAD (Schunkert H et al Nat Genet. doi:10.1038/ng.784 [published online March 6, 2011]). In a second study, the Coronary Artery Disease Genetics Consortium reported an analysis of 71 075Europeans and South Asians and identified 5 new loci for CAD (Peden JF et al. Nat Genet. doi:10.1038/ng.782 [published online March 6, 2011]). A third study, by investigators from China, analyzed 7593 individuals of Han Chinese ancestry and identified 1 locus associated with CAD (Wang F et al. Nat Genet. doi:10.1038/ng.783 [published online March 6, 2011]).
