The Emerging Infections series from ASM Press is based on sessions presented at meetings of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Each chapter provides a summary of a particularly timely issue in the field of infectious diseases. Emerging Infections 9 offers updates on 18 emerging topics, many authored by international experts in the field.
Most chapters are successful in providing concise, yet complete, synopses of specific topics. The section on Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus summarizes the data on this intra-amoebic virus, eloquently reviewing the evidence for and against its pathogenicity. The chapter on hepatitis E covers everything from its discovery to diagnostics, epidemiology, and vaccine development. With 336 references, it is a comprehensive review on hepatitis E. Some topics will also have relevance for readers in other fields. Chapters on cytomegalovirus and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus–like infections will be of interest to transplant physicians. The cytomegalovirus section in particular contains useful information on prophylaxis and treatment, as well as a section on drug-resistant virus, an emerging clinical problem among patients undergoing transplantation.
