The American Medical Association, from the time of its organization, has sought to secure the highest practicable standard of medical qualification for the physicians of our country, and, thereby, to give the public the best obtainable skill. The Journal, in its efforts to reflect the sentiment of the medical profession of the United States, has from time to time presented to its readers the efforts that are being made through our different medical organizations and by State legislation to elevate the standard of medical attainment, and to determine a degree of attainment that should entitle a physician to the right to practice medicine. It has been made manifest that the Federal Government cannot either undertake to educate physicians, or to establish any uniform standard of qualification for medical practice.
