Many state and county medical societies throughout the country are observing the first national Community Health Week, Oct 20 to 26.
This national program was established by a resolution of the House of Delegates of the AMA at its meeting Nov 25 to 28, 1962, in Los Angeles. The resolution urged the adoption of this event by all state and county societies as "an outstanding means of cooperation between the medical profession and the health services and agencies in each community."
The manner of observance of Community Health Week has been left to the discretion of each state and county medical society. Such activities as health fairs, science fairs, immunization campaigns, and orientation of students about medical and health careers are focal points around which community observances and publicity have been organized.
The objective of the national program will be to focus public attention, at the community level, on the
