Evaluation of Chlorprothixene  (Taractan)CHLORPROTHIXENE, an agent chemically and pharmacologically related to the phenothiazine compounds, is effective as a tranquilizing agent. The drug also possesses antiemetic properties. However, there is no substantial evidence to indicate that the degree of efficacy and incidence of untoward effects produced by chlorprothixene are significantly different from those of the phenothiazine group of tranquilizers currently available.

Actions and Uses  Chlorprothixene (chemically 2-chloro-9-[3-dimethylaminopropylidene]thiaxanthene) is a major tranquilizer with a chemical structure very similar to that of chlorpromazine and other phenothiazine compounds. Available clinical evidence indicates that it may be effective in the treatment of acute and chronic schizophrenic reactions and in those psychotic and severe neurotic conditions in which agitation, anxiety, and tension predominate. More definitive evidence is necessary to assess the ultimate therapeutic efficacy of this drug, since the clinical studies performed to date generally lack good design and adequate control.It has been reported
