ALPHÉE CAZENAVE (1795-1877)

Pierre Louis Alphée Cazenave of Paris, pupil of Biett, founded the first journal devoted to diseases of the skin and syphilis—Annales des Maladies de la Peau et de la Syphilis (1843-1852). The Annales published a number of dermatologic communications by Cazenave based upon clinical observations in the wards of the Hospital of Saint Louis, while he was professor on the faculty of medicine in Paris. In 1828, Cazenave and Schedel collaborated on a textbook of medicine, Handbook of Diseases of the Skin, which dealt largely with the clinical lectures of Biett.1 The interest of Cazenave in cutaneous diseases was disclosed early in his career; his doctoral thesis discussed dermatologic problems in general medicine. His name is associated particularly with chronic lupus erythematosus and with pemphigus foliaceus.

The term "lupus erythematosus" did not appear in the communications early in the 19th century, and there is no record that Biett himself
