ABSTRACT

Clean Air Act  Status—Approved by the House and sent to the Senate.This bill completely revises the air pollution control law and makes it permanent.Stating that Congress recognizes the growth in urban population, industrial development, and the increasing use of motor vehicles which result in air pollution, the bill states as its purposes: (1) to protect the nation's air resources in order to promote public health and welfare; (2) to initiate and accelerate a research and development program for the prevention and control of air pollution; (3) to provide technical and financial assistance to states and local governments in connection with air pollution control programs.The program would be administered by the Department of HEW.The bill would require the HEW Secretary to encourage: (1) cooperative activities by states and local governments for the prevention and control of air pollution; (2) the enactment of improved and, as far as
