ABSTRACT

Pesticides Hearings.  —Two cabinet officers told Congress that pesticides may present some dangers when improperly used but are vital to maintain the quality of the nation's food supply.Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman told a Senate Government Operations Subcommittee that, "Chemical pesticides are an essential and indispensable part of modern life and must continue to be used if we are to maintain the adequacy and wholesomeness of the nation's food supply."HEW Secretary Anthony Celebrezze said, "These chemicals are in wide use today because of the great benefits they provide."Celebrezze voiced "considerable assurance that we have no evidence that the food supply of the country is dangerous to consumers through use of pesticides where directions for use are followed."However, Celebrezze said, more research and information is needed and much can be provided through a proposed environmental health center in his department.The subcommittee, headed by Sen.
