A New Concept of Aging 

Question.  What is the AMA Committee on Aging's viewpoint on the problems of aging?

Answer.  The Committee has no viewpoint on that subject. The Committee feels there are no such things as special "problems of the aging" except perhaps for the particular circumstances imposed by retirement.When the Committee was first formed, it was named the "Committee on Geriatrics." It was directed to "study the diseases of the aged." At its first meeting, however, the Committee nearly talked itself out of business. It immediately became obvious that there were no "diseases of the aged" specifically resulting from the passage of a certain number of years.The 1959 death statistics of the United States listed 25 children under five dying of ateriosclerotic heart disease, including coronary disease, and this cause of death appears in every five-year segment thereafter.
