Tackled vigorously while attempting a punt return this football season, Northwestern University halfback Woodrow ("Woody") L. Campbell remained on the ground after the play ended.
Stephen E. Reid, MD, Northwestern team physician, responded promptly from the sidelines.
"It looked as though he were knocked out," Dr. Reid recalled for JAMAMedical News. "But before we got out on the field, they called down from the press box and said: 'It isn't his head.' "
The long-range negative report was correct. Upon reaching the fallen player, Dr. Reid found it was a shoulder injury.
Some knowledge of Mr. Campbell's condition was available in one part of the press box because the 5 ft 10 inch, 200 lb senior played the entire 1966 football season schedule with electroencephalographic electrodes attached to his scalp.
