Physicians Discuss Facets Of Neck Pain

ABSTRACT

"Since relief of pain following anand interbody fusion is so rapid compared to the traditional forms of treatment for neck pain due to ruptured discs, the operation should be considered as the conservative form of treatment, and offered the patient initially."

Complete Release  Ralph B. Cloward, MD, told participants in the Symposium on Neck Pain at the American Medical Association Clinical Convention that such surgery brought complete relief of pain in 97% of his 742 patients operated on in the last 10 years for lesions of the cervical spine.In 178 patients, or 24%, the indication for operation was relief of neck and shoulder pain due to internal rupture or degenerated intervertebral discs. None of these patients had pain in the upper extremities or sensory or motor involvement which could be attributed to compression of the nerve root or spinal cord by the disc lesion.In the past, Dr. Cloward
