ABSTRACT

HEW Spending Trimmed—  President Johnson said that as part of a drive to reduce federal expenditures this fiscal year, Health, Education, and Welfare Department activities cancelled or delayed will total some $530 million in cut-back programs and $275 million in spending during the fiscal year ending July 1. Johnson said this would include deferral of some construction and "transfer of certain allocations that are unspent in certain areas."Welfare and health services will not be affected. "It would be shortsighted to shortchange the young or the needy, the ill or the old," he said.Most of the savings involve postponing for a matter of months construction awards for mental retardation centers, hospitals, health centers, and schools. HEW officials said no construction grants have been cancelled outright.
