Hematology: 'Sustained Explosion of Knowledge'

ABSTRACT

Clinicians, of course, no longer ^^ mistake the liver as the organ from which emanates "the carrier of every vital function, blood." This was the concept of the Babylonians.

But is there a modern lag between the new realities of hematology and some aspects of clinical practice?

Not unexpectedly, there is. Five hematologists sought to help close this gap during a symposium.

"There's been a sustained explosion of knowledge in this field," explained Maxwell M. Wintrobe, MD, PhD, panel chairman.... "There's so much new and significant that we could take three days to fill the clinician in and still not complete the job."

But in 200 or so minutes allotted them, Dr. Wintrobe and his colleagues made a number of valuable points. Among them:

  • Both heredity and commonlyused drugs are at the base of a widening spectrum of hemolytic reactions;

  • Iron deficiency anemia is often mismanaged;

  • Much diagnostic
