The past 12 months or so might be termed, aptly, "The Year of the Big Look at Medicine." There has been a multitude of studies begun, in process, or completed and with reports in progress, in the mail, or delivered. (See Section I, p 848.) These are in addition to such continuing studies as are represented by the 66th Annual Report on Medical Education in the United States, which is presented in this issue (pp 847-938).
The special studies range tremendously in their objectives. The study of the National Commission on Community Health Services had the sweeping goal of defining the means for achieving a single "... integrated program which will provide comprehensive health services of high quality to all in each community." Two studies were sponsored by the AMA Council on Medical Education and had more restricted goals.
The first of these concerned itself with defining the general and specific
