For the past 40 years, the annual report, "Graduate Medical Education in the United States," has been published in a specific issue of The Journal. As the Directory of Approved Internships and Residencies became too large for inclusion in one Internship and Residency Number of The Journal, the annual report has appeared in the Education Number. The separately published Directory also contains the annual report; because of space limitations, however, certain special notices and tables, not included in the version published in the Directory, are included in full in the version published in the Education Number.
A deliberate attempt has been made to maintain the format of the same tables year after year, so that interested readers could make meaningful comparisons of trends.
