The section on medical school expenditures is prepared annually by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. Lee Powers, Associate Director of the AAMC, and Mr. A. J. Carroll, Assistant Director, Division of Operational Studies, prepared this report from financial data submitted by the medical schools in response to the joint questionnaire.
This report compares 1964-1965 data regarding the combined operating expenditures of all US medical schools (84 fully activated four-year schools, including one in Puerto Rico, and three two-year schools) with similar data for 1958-1959 and the intervening years. It does not include capital outlay or teaching hospital financial data.
The widely diverse objectives and operating characteristics of individual medical schools make the financial statements they ordinarily prepare for their own use unsuitable for data comparisons and for the preparation of an accurate quantitative report for the entire country.
