Full-Time Faculty Positions
In the academic year 1965-1966, the number of full-time faculty in the 88 American medical schools with enrolled undergraduate medical students reached an all-time high of 17,149. This was an increase of 1,635 faculty members or 10.5% over the previous year's high of 15,514. Only in 1962-1963, when there was an increase of 1,641, were so many full-time faculty added in a single year.On a departmental basis, every area showed an increase in number of faculty in 1965-1966 except urology, where there was actually a decline of eight members. In the basic science fields, the greatest increase was in pathology, where 120 new faculty were added, a growth of 10.7%. However, the largest percentage increase was in pharmacology, where 116 new faculty members represented a growth of 19.3% over the number for the previous year.
