During the past few years there have been several developments which promise to have major influence on the nature and direction of American medical education. Some of these have occurred as a result of direct activities of the medical profession and the medical schools. Others have been in response to social change and public demand, or political interpretation of public need, which resulted in new federal legislation. Together they have already made an impact, and they are likely to produce significant changes in medical education for many years to come.
Several studies of major proportions, within and without the profession, have been carried out.
