ABSTRACT

Awards, Honors  James A. Shannon, MD, director of the National Institutes of Health, received the John M. Russell Award for his "outstanding contribution to academic medicine," at the conclusion of the 14th annual meeting of the Markle Scholars in Academic Medicine meeting in New York.The award was originated in 1962 by the Markle Scholars to honor John M. Russell, president of the Markle Foundation, on the 15th anniversary of the fund's program to support young medical school faculty members.It is given "to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to academic medicine, the impact of which has been felt widely and outside the recipient's own specialty field and beyond the persons in his immediate entourage."Robert Dunning Dripps, MD, professor and chairman of the department of anesthesiology, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, has received the 1965 Distinguished Service Award of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
