During the years 1952 to 1961, the Department of Medicine's Outpatient Teaching Clinic at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center undertook an evaluation of student performance. The structure both of the curriculum and of the outpatient clinic itself should be enlarged upon in order to provide an understanding of the setting in which this evaluation took place.
Just prior to this era, the general screening clinic and the Internal Medicine Clinic and its various subspecialty clinics were amalgamated into a single clinic known as the Medicine Clinic. Almost without exception, new ambulatory adult patients were sent to this clinic. (Otherwise healthy prenatal patients constituted the largest group of patients not routinely seen first in the Medicine Clinic.)
