A Cleveland clinical investigator and a German physiological chemist have been named to share a $50,000 prize for their basic contributions to knowledge of hypertension and arteriosclerosis.Harry Goldblatt, MD, director of the Louis D. Beaumont Memorial Research Laboratories at Cleveland's Mount Sinai Hospital, will divide the first annual Stouffer Prize with Ernst Klenk, PhD, rector and professor of physiological chemistry, University of Cologne.Dr. Goldblatt was cited for experimental and clinical work, beginning in the 1930's, which helped establish the role of renal artery constriction and adrenal malfunction in hypertension.Dr. Klenk, called "The Father of Modern Lipid Biochemistry," did much of the early work on the relationship between fatty compounds and arteriosclerosis.The winners were selected by a seven-man international committee chaired by Irvine H. Page, MD, Cleveland Clinic senior research consultant.
