For years I have felt that the Hippocratic Oath was antiquated. However, I have refrained from taking action because to tamper with The Oath seemed both presumptuous and profane, until lately, that is, when an esteemed colleague told me that during the war he rewrote the Lord's Prayer. This, plus a recent article, "Is the Hippocratic Oath Obsolete," by Robert A. Beatty determined my course of action.
The New Oath
I swear by DeBakey the surgeon, and Salk, Terry, and White and I take to witness all the members of the governing council of the AMA that, according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation: To reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance but not split fees with him, and relieve his necessities if required and deductible; to look upon
