George Morris Piersol, MD, emeritus professor of physical medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, died Aug 19 following extensive metastasis of lymphosarcoma.
Dr. Piersol, who was 85, was dean of the university's Graduate School of Medicine from 1954 to 1957, and helped found the rehabilitation center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. Five years later, the remodeled and enlarged facility was named The George Morris Piersol Rehabilitation Center.
After earning his bachelor of science (1902) and MD (1905) at the University of Pennsylvania, he was an intern and later chief resident at the university's hospital and joined the medical faculty in 1907. In 1920, he was named professor and chairman of the Graduate School of Medicine's department of medicine.
A founder, president, and secretary of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Piersol received the ACP's Alfred Stengel Memorial Award in 1951
