George A. Hallenbeck, MD, head of a section of surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, and professor of surgery and physiology in the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, University of Minnesota at Rochester, has been named chairman of the 19 sections of surgery at the Mayo Clinic.Dr. Hallenbeck succeeds John W. Kirklin, MD, who will leave Mayo Sept 1 to become head of the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Alabama at Birmingham.The University of Tennessee Memorial Research Center, Knoxville, has appointed four investigators to its senior staff. They are Alan Solomon, MD (immunoglobulins); Walter Farkas, PhD (protein synthesis, nucleic acid chemistry); Paul Wigler, PhD (enzyme inhibition and synthetic organic chemistry); and Arthur Kretchmar, MD, PhD (biomathematical models of bone marrow cellular compartments).Although physically a part of the University of Tennessee Memorial Research Hospital in Knoxville, staff members are free of clinical or teaching
