Sixty-four paralytic poliomyelitis cases were reported in the United States during the past year for the lowest national total yet recorded.
Reporting its final classification of 1965 reports, the Poliomyelitis Surveillance Unit at the US Public Health Service's Communicable Disease Center, Atlanta, said there were 58 patients with residual paralysis, 3 with no residual paralysis, and 3 for whom there was no follow-up report.
In addition, there were seven patients whose cases were recorded as nonparalytic polio. One other case report received by the PSU was classified finally as aseptic meningitis, unknown etiology.
Of the five deaths attributed to polio in 1965, there was one each in the 0 to 4, 5 to 9, 10 to 14, 20 to 29, and 30 to 39 age groups. The two adults were male and the three youngsters were female.
